Yesterday, 15th of September 2020, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu launched LAWMA Academy, the educational arm of Lagos State Waste Management Authority, and we are highly honoured to have been the selected as the convenience service provider for the excellencies and distinguished guests of the event.
The aim of the Academy is to promote knowledge and awareness on effective waste management especially among the younger generation of Lagosians. The Governor, represented by his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat noted that effective waste management played a pivotal role in ensuring cleaner and livable environment, hence the nee policies and programmes to promote sustainable environment, and boost LAWMA’s capacity to perform its statutory duties.
he said: “As we all know, waste management plays an important role in ensuring a sustainable and healthy environment, which is why many nations and states expend huge resources on developing strategies to ensure clean environment through efficient, effective and sutainable waste management system. Lagos is certainly not different and that is one of the reasons why we are here today”.
Sanwo-Olu stated that it was gratifying for the State Government to launch the LAWMA Academy, an initiate aimed at making Lagos a safer, cleaner place to live in, noting that only a safer environment, free of toxins and filthy, could guarantee the good health of every citizen, improve productivity and enable them to operate at optimal level.
He said, “Our dream of course as a government is to make Lagos a 21st Century economy and a very smart state, but you will agree with me that this will be possible if we do not take the issue of waste management seriously and that’s why we must all commend the ministry of environment, management and staff of LAWMA for the good job they have been doing to keep Lagos clean, healthy and habitable for all of us”

LAWMA ACADEMY OFFERINGS
Internship Programme:
The internship program is a structured program that is set to educate young and brilliant minds of different background ranging from environmental sciences, Accounting, Architecture, Engineering, Environmental sciences to mention a few.
The programme would enroll applicants from the ages of 18-28. This program will give these young people an opportunity to have a practical experience on waste management. The program will cover different sub sectors of Waste Management such as Data Collection and Entry, Accounting, Fleet management, waste financing/economics, Waste Recycling etc.
In addition, the interns will also learn general corporate practices like office etiquette, reporting, time management etc. and they will also be exposed to networking especially within the waste management industryThis program is a stepping stone for interns to grow in the Corporate World and enhance their employability afterwards. Specialty Training
As the name implies, this training will cover special areas of interest in waste management as waste management processes are more advanced than just collection, transportation and disposal at landfills.
It comprises different areas like Resource Recovery & Waste Management, Smarter Solutions for Segregation & Logistics, Fleet Management, Waste Recycling, waste PSP models, Waste Financing, Waste Audits, Forensic Waste Analysis, Waste to wealth etc.
This training will improve participants skills in waste management, promote efficiency and afford participants the opportunity to translate what they have learnt to innovative business ideas that will make them financially independent, solve waste management problems and create employment which will help boost the economy.
This training will engage key stakeholders from environmental consultants, professionals who work in the waste management sector or on waste management infrastructural projects, project managers, administrators, coordinators and other professionals who work on community based projects.

Organizational Training
Organizational Training is a program that cut across all sectors of the labour market, trade unions and organisations.
Participants will learn the rudiments of waste management and concept of sustainable waste management practices which emphasizes on reduce , reuse and recycle
(3R of waste) in their facilities and organisations.
This is aimed at eradicating improper waste handling in business and corporate organisations whilst promoting a cleaner and healthier environment.
The training would entail seminars, practical sessions, group activities, site visits and presentations to mention a few.
This training will engage facility managers in various sectors ranging from Hospitality, Maritime, Petroleum, Telecoms, banking, Manufacturing, Food and beverage, Malls, Religious institutions, Event managers, Security sector etc.

Summer School
The LAWMA Summer School is a program that centers on Students ranging from ages 8-18.
LAWMA has put in place a platform for these pupils to come and learn about waste management for a period of 2-4 weeks during their Summer break. It is believed that these children will propagate information and lessons learnt during the Summer School with friends, in their homes, schools, worship centers, etc.
While at the summer school, pupils can also develop interest for waste management which can metamorphosed into great ideas to create value and solve waste management problems. They would also have access to summer vacation trips to see waste management plants across the state and students educational programs to enhance learnings.
